Synthesized music from all over the world tops this week’s agenda, with former wedding performer Omar Souleyman, accidental acid-house pioneer Charanjit Singh, Nigerian pop artist Flavour, prince of darkness Trent Reznor, Virginia-based techno/dubstep artist Martyn and local producer Louis Weeks all playing shows. Over the weekend, D.C.’s Backyard Band teams up with longtime Memphis rapper Project Pat—older brother of Juicy J—for a late-night show at Howard Theatre; and D.C. garage punks Thee Lolitas take a field trip to Silver Spring for a show at subterranean hamburger lair Quarry House.

All these picks and more in this week’s playlist:

Ready your fanny packs: This is a big week for outdoor music. Fort Reno wraps its short schedule Thursday with an unlikely pairing: electronic duo Protect-U and flower-sniffing hardcore band Give. Then two tornados touch down at Merriweather Post Pavilion later in the week, with Diplo’s bro-y Mad Decent Block Party taking over the Columbia, Maryland destination Friday, and the significantly less bro-y Summer Spirit Festival (with Ms. Lauryn Hill! Janelle Monae! Raheem DeVaughn! Junkyard and Backyard!) moving in the next day.

On the indoor tip, the largely enclosed DIY extravaganza In It Together Fest kicks into high gear this weekend, and promising uptown MC Ras Nebyu plays a mixtape release party Sunday at U Street Music Hall. Elsewhere, dancehall vet Barrington Levy drops by Howard Theatre, Japanese noise-rockers Boris melt eardrums at 9:30 Club, Bandwidth video star Mikaela Davis plays her harp at Jammin Java… and what else? Take a listen to our playlist and find out.

This week’s playlist starts with a still-underrecognized name in blues music: Bobby Rush, the octogenarian, guitar-slinging Louisianan who’s been making great tunes for more than half a century. Rush is such a killer bluesman—and an unapologetically dirty, funny performer—he deserves two slots on this week’s playlist: one for his 1970s hit “Chicken Heads” and another for the title track from his award-winning 2013 record, Down In Louisiana. Tomorrow night, Rush plays a solo set (translation: none of his sexy dancers) at the Hamilton downtown. Don’t miss it.

The rest of the week is one of the hipster-friendliest I’ve seen here in some time: Ian Svenonius’ Chain & the Gang plays two shows this weekend (one of them with one of my favorite Baltimore bands, Ed Schrader’s Music Beat); Ex Hex plays a slot at Rock & Roll Hotel later this week; hazy Brit pop band The Clientele—responsible for one of the best indie-pop albums of all time, the recently reissued Suburban Lightcomes to Black Cat; guitar-driven Brooklyn band DIIV also headlines the Cat; Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks play a make-up date at UHallSan Francisco fuzz-pop ensemble Fresh & Onlys stops by DC9 Thursday; wall-of-sound rockers Nothing return tonight after we just saw them here in June; Beck and Neutral Milk Hotel are both booked at Merriweather; and holy heck, Nick Cave is in town.

Oh, and Fort Reno hosts two fine shows this week, too.

The rest of this week’s picks in this totally stuffed playlist, below.

Both nouveau and sepia-toned hip-hop get stage time this week, with tomorrow’s Phil Ade/Lightshow twofer at U Street Music Hall, Thursday’s D.C. Loves Dilla showcase, De La Soul’s 25th anniversary party at Howard Theatre Saturday, and Salt N Pepa’s stop at Verizon Center Sunday. It also happens to be a great week for earwormy pop ensembles: Bandwidth video stars Phox perform at The Hamilton Saturday, Glasgow pop geniuses Camera Obscura (above) play 9:30 Club Friday, and Philly’s Cheers Elephant headline DC9 with support from locals The Jackfields Thursday. But if you want to see two rising acts in D.C.’s punk-rock scene, don’t miss Priests at Fort Reno Thursday and Olivia Neutron-John in Arlington on Saturday.

More chaos, fuzz and hummable indie-rock in this week’s playlist, below.

This week’s Sound Advice playlist starts with feedback and ends with a throwback: fuzzy Vancouver band Weed (July 3 at Rock & Roll Hotel) starts us off, and we close with a classic from UGK, the Port Arthur, Texas, duo that launched rapper Bun B (who’s at Echostage July 3) into the upper crust of hip-hop’s Southern underground.

In between, we’re all over the map from Gaithersburg to Nairobi to Hangzhou: MoCo hip-hop star Logic plays a hometown show tomorrow night, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival (see our photos) wraps this weekend after some must-see performances from Kenyan and Chinese artists including pipa virtuoso Wu Man.

Hear them all in our playlist, below.
