Vinyl diehards had begun to track down Death’s recordings. Then Bobby’s children caught on. What they heard stunned them — they could scarcely believe their dad had played in a band that sounded like punk before punk existed.

Even if you consider the MC5 more hard rock/proto-metal, and the Dolls more glam – both of which are highly debatable – there’s still the Stooges. If ‘Fun House’ (released 1970) isn’t a punk record, then I don’t know what to say.

Sorry, but I really can’t agree with that. In terms of historical importance *or* musical quality.

like elvis, death owes much to others. death was mediocre and did not gain traction in Detroit because of that. death’s contributions are what exactly? atypical. doing something more unusual.

death failed in the end because they were just another “cover” band to Detroit music fans. death is not worthy of all this acclaim.

iggy.. ny dolls….vu…..and others were “punk”. death sounds like an amalgamation of the detroit rock bands of the era…
i can hear grand funk. death was just an average rock band – nothing more. all the hubbub over them is puzzling – so many other bands are far more deserving of the attention that has been given to them.

Can death actually play their instruments? If so they ain’t punk. Why would any band brag about being punk?- its just really crappy rocknroll -all attitude- no talent. The stooges were way ahead of death. Iggy pop today plays great rock music. Root boy slim and sex change band pre 1978- best rock band of its time.

I was just trying to make the point that it wasn’t them that were claiming to be the first punk band ever. Just because the person writing the article didn’t mention The Stooges, doesn’t mean that it’s intended to be revisionist.

They were promoting some of the late 60’s and early 70’s punk music. WPKN-FM, carried some of it and I did get copies of the Fifth Estate (alternative weekly) out of Detroit area. The term punk rock was actually a political screw the system set of words. It was that brief period between uncontrolled rebellion and what we called corporate rock. I’m glad Death is getting it’s due and the remaining band members who played Regae with Lambsbread here in Vermont and taken up the punk scene again, and that some of their kids are doing the punk band, Rough Francis, and yes it seems like the only few black musicians that got into this music. But, and again, but as I’ve been actually told off, please let’s look at the punk music scene around Detroit during this whole time period.
