World Cafe Next: The Twilight Sad

The Twilight Sad, the Scottish trio of singer James Graham, guitarist Andy MacFarlane, and drummer Mark Devine, makes thick-accented rock that can be rousing, bleak or both. The group has as much in common with the moody post-punk group Interpol as it does with its fellow Scots in Frightened Rabbit.

It makes sense, then, that Peter Katis — who has worked with Interpol and Frightened Rabbit — produced and mixed The Twilight Sad’s fourth album, Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave, which came out in October. World Cafe Next: Honeyblood

World Cafe Next: Sekou Kouyate & Joe Driscoll

Today on World Cafe: Next, we feature a unique duo. Sekou Kouyate, from Guinea in West Africa, has been described as “the Jimi Hendrix of the kora” for the way he electrifies the 21-string African harp. Joe Driscoll is an American living in England; he’s a rapper, beat-boxer and loop-maker.

Not even speaking each other’s language, the two formed a band when they met at a European festival. Now, less than three years later, they’ve released an album of their music together called Faya. World Cafe Next: The Districts

The Districts started out as a high-school band in Lititz, Penn. After some wise touring that included a SXSW visit last year — as well as a video with more than 300,000 views — the group now has a self-titled EP due out Tuesday on a national label. World Cafe Next: Lake Street Dive

We can ignore the buzz about Lake Street Dive no longer. The quartet, which met at the New England Conservatory in Boston, combines great instrumental virtuosity with a love of singing roots-influenced music with jazzy flair. Not to deny praise to the male members of the band, but the chops of bassist Bridget Kearney and the burnished voice of Rachael Price are the focus here. After drawing internet attention through videos of wonderfully arranged covers, now come the originals on their album Bad Self Portraits.

World Cafe Next: Dott

This week’s pick for World Cafe: Next is Dott, a young quartet from Galway, Ireland. The music on the band’s debut album, Swoon, calls upon the sounds of garage-pop, with chugging, jangly guitars out front and the vocals of Anna McCarthy on top.
