To mark the one-year anniversary of the most popular Tiny Desk Concert ever and the 10th anniversary of his debut album, Rappa Ternt Sanga, we hosted T-Pain at our Washington, D.C. headquarters. The inimitable Floridian performed a short set of classics, both his own and others’, and a brand new, never before heard song from his forthcoming album, Stoicville: The Phoenix.

T-Pain Is Playing A Concert At NPR — Get Tickets

T-Pain, the patron saint of Auto-Tune, is returning to NPR. The R&B/hip-hop artist is scheduled to perform a “surprise” concert at the media organization’s headquarters in D.C. Thursday, NPR announced today.

Thursday’s show will follow up on T-Pain’s now-legendary 2014 Tiny Desk Concert at NPR in which he shocked the world by singing — quite well! — without his signature pitch correction. (“T-Pain Singing Without Auto-Tune Is Actually Really Good,” Gawker proclaimed.) Video from the performance became NPR’s most-watched Tiny Desk performance ever.

December marks the 10th anniversary of T-Pain’s hit debut, Rappa Ternt Sanga. But tomorrow’s gig won’t just be a walk down memory lane — he’s expected to premiere two songs from his forthcoming album, Stoicville: The Phoenix.

NPR Music will give away a limited number of tickets to the show tonight (Wednesday) at 8 p.m. EST. If you can’t be there, the concert will stream live via NPRMusic.org starting at 8 p.m. Thursday. It will also be archived online.

T-Pain: Tiny Desk Concert

T-Pain’s fingerprints are all over pop and R&B and hip-hop. He wasn’t the first musician to use Auto-Tune as an instrument — he noticed it on a Jennifer Lopez remix, and remembers “Deep” well — but it was, as he says, his style. For a while, in the mid-2000s, he lived at the top of the charts. He dominated that brief moment of our lives when ringtones were a thing. He was celebrated as an innovator, and he happily took his talents where he was invited, which was everywhere.

But somewhere along the way, somebody got it twisted. “People felt like I was using it to sound good,” says T-Pain, in an interview that will air on All Things Considered. “But I was just using it to sound different.”

He just turned 30, but T-Pain has already done enough to drop a greatest hits album next week. We asked him if he’d grace the Tiny Desk without any embellishment or effects to show what’s really made his career: his voice, and those songs.
