Also, in the rest of the article – what’s the end game here? To play little clubs for $100, or maybe pack some small clubs and get a bit more? Make it up on merch?

If you’re getting packed houses from your own word of mouth, you should be gearing up to get to the next level. Performing Arts Centers (PACs), festivals, opening slots for more established acts, etc. Great if you can tour the country and make $500 or $1000 a gig, but touring costs will kill that pretty quickly. In order to survive, you need to progress in the music hierarchy.

That’s not selling out, that’s generating enough income so that you can afford to continue creating music and exposing more people to your material.
