Led Zeppelin I had been released just a week earlier, and my friends and I – we all played in local garage bands — had glued ourselves to stereo speakers the entire week marveling at the album. Four of us drove from Annandale, VA, to see the show, which I’d heard about from a guy selling the Quicksilver Times underground newspaper on the street in Georgetown. In the parking lot of the youth center a longhaired guy was discreetly selling hash, and later the auditorium was filled with hash smoke, so he must have sold a lot of it. Afterwards in the parking lot, our little group got separated, and me and one friend were beaten up in an unprovoked attacked by drunk local jocks. They’d been driving past, and I guess they didn’t like what they saw. LZ was great.
